Default Sky dish with mono LNB????

Is it possible to use a sky dish with a mono LNB to receive hotbird and astra 1 or would I need a larger dish?

I have a read a post of a zone 2 dish being used with a monoblock, but a zone 1, I doubt it very much. No harm in trying though if you fancied a little experiment.

Cheers Robbo, I might just give that a try, not much to loose.

You will find, that there are some transponders,on both 19E & 13E,where there will be no signal, due to the zone 2 mindish being undersized.
Also the rain margin is lessened due to its size.
If you haven't got the dish,go for a 80cm,however,if you've got a zone 2 minidish lying around or already installed, then go ahead, but for long term stability, and any missing transponders, you will need a 80cm.

You probably have the best chance if the monoblock was mounted centrally rather than offset. As I can confirm that both Hotbird and Astra1 can be picked up with a small minidish with the LNB at the focus, although there is little margin for rain fade as SAT_WORLD says.

Something also to remember,is that the monoblocks available are universal monoblocks, that have a 40mm lnb collar.
To use them on a zone 2 minidish, you will need to get a Triax lnb feed adaptor
Remember that the Hotbird lnb,has to be placed in the lnb holder, whilst the Astra1 lnb,has to be raised higher than the Hotbird lnb.

Yes, much better idea than hacking the guts out of a minidish LNB and gaffa taping a 40mm one to the original plastic casing.

Which is what I did when I had a motorised minidish and wanted zero Skew.

That's a thought fozzer, why not motorise it instead?

I did have the larger Sly dish, not sure of the zone thingy and it was just fine for Hotbird. It was the new dish I got when I had Sly installed, there was an old dish on the chimney and I used it for Sly and got the installer to set the new dish on Hotbird. so if you have the larger Sly dish you should be OK with it.

Very best regards Wez

I think I'll just get a 80cm dish and do it that way. Don't want to motorise it as it's not for me but for a relation and I'd be round there every five minutes to show the how to do it.

I only play with stuff I can afford - so basically, the stuff I find in skips being dumped or off my local free (re)cycling group. I currently have a sky minidish picking up Hotbaird fairly successfully. It is mounted about 1.5 meters off of the ground on my garden fence. However, if a big cloud come, a few channels drop out - especially I have noticed on some of the Farsi / Iranian channels (not that I watch them). I may need to adjust slightly, as I am sure I had these before I moved the dish.
