New To Hacking

Hi there, as you can see from the title i am completely new to all this so bear with me. Basically it really is my last option to get faster speeds, i was willing to pay to upgrade to 4mb through VM (i am on 2mb currently) but for some stupid reason it was never be able to be upgraded despite me paying for 4mb one month when i never even received those speeds. Tech support did nothing to help at all and it cost me a bomb in calls so i'm really pissed off at VM at the moment quite frankly.

The only other option is to get on ADSL broadband but i don't want and don't need a landline so that's not an option.

I would now like your help please on how i would even start about getting faster speeds out of my line. I know i won't be able to do this overnight but hopefully eventually (with your help) i will be able to achieve this.

Firstly i know i've got to buy another modem as using the one VM gave me will cause trouble if i'm not mistaken... So question no. 1 is what modems the best and easiest to get for modding? And no. 2 i would like to ask is, is there any soldering involved in hacking a modem?? I hope not as i am useless at that sort of thing.
