Volksmusik.tv quits cable and satellite

Volksmusik.tv, the German thematic channel for fans of German folk music, will cease distribution via cable and satellite on May 5.

The service will continue to be offered as a live-stream on the website www.volksmusik.tv as well as via mobile TV, the broadcaster announced in Bremen. Volksmusik.tv promises its viewers to “very swiftly” return to cable networks, but explained that, “it will unfortunately still take a while to resume satellite transmissions”. No explanation was given as to the reasons behind the retreat.

At its return, the channel plans to again broadcast in full-screen format, after the TV picture was decreased over previous months to allow space for additional information to be screened, for example viewer greetings and information on songs, tour dates, websites and fan clubs.

The advertising-financed free-to-air channel has been available in digital on Astra (19.2° East) as well as on cable networks serving more than 3 million households. In September 2007 the sister service Auto-Moto-TV, which shared a broadcasting slot with Volksmusik.tv, already ceased transmissions via cable and satellite. The thematic channel for car and motorbike enthusiasts has since then been available only as a live-stream on the internet TV platform Zattoo.
