Default DVB-C on Linux?

Has anyone successfully set-up a Linux machine as a cable box? I have put a DVB-T card into one of my Linux machines before, and used it solely for recording (it didn't regularly have a screen connected). I would then watch the video from a Windows machine.

It can't be that hard to do, but I cannot see it as being acceptible (the the rest of the family) given the time taken to boot/wake-up compared to a dedicated STB.

Why do they work better, because they generally include a hardware MPEG-2 decoder? I didn't think there was a great deal of difference between DVB-C, -T and -S cards from the software's point-of-view?

if there was a program such as dvb viewer for linux i'd definitely consider it..

been meaning to switch to linux as my main os but not having tv prevented me - and dvb viewer is amazing compared to progdvb/dvbdream so i'd want something that could meet it..

The 1501 work great under linux, kaffiene with a suitable plugin and all the channels and the remote works .
You are going to need to use the modules from http://www.linuxtv.org/ regardless of what software you want to use.

I've had no success with MythTv as it requires you to use sasng to get encrypted channels and I have been unable to insert into my kernel without causing a "Kernel oops".

The biggest problem I had was turning the channels, but I am a total beginner to DVB technology, but its a fun learning curve

As it is my 1st post, thanks for all the info contained on this site, its a really good resource.
