Default Which CAM do I need ?

Hi,
I have a htpc set up with freeview running VistaMCE which i like. I have just bought a FloppyDTV card for cable, only to find out that MCE doesn't support softcams.

I now need a hardcam but dont know which to buy. I already have a card programmer and a couple of smartcards about (rom10 mosc, fun4, atmega and a tit1/2) so would like to make use of these.

Can some one advise me what to buy for a newb and is there a tut/guide on how to set them up ? I'm after a AU system to replace my STB.

Oh by the way, i'm on UK cable exc*w

Hi sdf uk,
I am looking at buying the FloppyDTV C/CI and have been having a look at hardcams for it, only thing is I use XP but I may be able to help a little. MCE don’t support cable or satellite afaik, so you have to set the floppy up as a dvb-t card, which I suppose you have for freeview.
A blue zeta cam (joker cam clone) flashed with 0.79 firmware is one to use with MCE I have read. No guide or tut afaik, I am new to this so won’t be much help, hope this is of use to you.

Thanks for the reply Willin.
I have installed the card ok and scaned for the channels which provided 313 channels and am able to view fta channels ok through the dvb-c card and all seems ok, i just need a hardcam to decrypt channels.

There doesn't seem to be much info around for dvb-c and hardcams, so i've taken the risk of buying a t-rex 4.6 supermodule and will have a play with that to start. I've also had suggestions for the joker cam so will try one of those if the t-rex doesn't live upto the job.

I am also new to this and will post my findings about the t-rex when i've played with it, but may take some time since i'll have to work it out myself. If you do get a joker cam, i would be greatful if you could let me know your results.

i've been using dvb-c cards for a while now, got a tt2100c on mp xp pro pc and a floppydtv on my vista mce media centre. i started using fenrir and yankse first on the pc with my theatre then bought a blue zeta cam and couldn't flash the joker 0.79 firmware on it, thought i fooked it, so i bought a white tcecrypt which took the joker firware immediately. u say u got a programmer but it needs to be a cas interface to change the cam to a jokercam. i then retried the zeta and it then took the flash so i ended up with 2 cams.
first used a rom11 mosc but now use fun 5's. i built a vista media pc and use the second cam and card in that, no probs all au.

if u r going to buy 1 of these cams be careful, some take the joker firmware ok some seem to have trouble.

it's been recommended u speak to the retailer to check it will take the firmware or ask him to flash it for u. i heard hisat will do that.

i've been using dvb-c cards for a couple of years....started with a technotrend 2100c and softcam decryption using fenrir and yankse.
wanted to try hardcam and card so bought a blue zetacam, needed to flash to jokercam v0.79 so got a cas interface 2+ programmer to do this inf usb won't do this. zetacam wouldn't take the flash therefore after weeks of trying thought i knackered it so bought a white icecrypt which took the joker firware instantly - tried the zeta again and that then also took the flash......don't know why??? then programmed a mosc and used mytheatre on a xp pro pc and all ok.

after a while thought i'd build a vista media centre which i did using a Antec fusion black case - matx board - 3800+ duo core cpu - and finally a floppydtv. vista saw the card immediately, there is a small amount of reg editing to make vista think it's a dvb-t card as Micro$oft doesn't support dvb-c. Initially had to download epg from radio times using xmltv and import it automatically using bladerunner pro, gave a full 2 weeks epg with more detail than virmin but is difficult to set up. Now there is sky support for epg includes 95%+ of all channels on cable a few missing like diva tv and sky movies sd2 but overall not bad. i've switched from moscs to fun5's now both with au imgs.

anyhow if u are going to use a bluezeta or white icecrypt make sure it takes the joker firmware.
someone has stated that Hisat will cinfirm this and may even flash it for u.

been running for over a year - went down only once during the change to the keyroll method - but then changed from the fun to the mosc and all ok. since the latest flash gone back to the fun as that needs no maintenance.

alot of people using mediaportal and other apps but i like the ui of vista mce, got all my music. films, internet, etc etc on a toshiba 37" hdtv 1080p at the touch of a button. also no need to encode films to dvd as u can play all formats divx, xvid etc.
just hope more virmin introduce hd soon as only bbc support at the moment.
hope this helps.

Hi m8, thanx for the reply, it has helped a lot. I have at the mo got a freextv cam which i'm waiting for my cas3 programmer to arrive to flash it to joker 0.79. I have already set it up with vista and got all channels with most epg using the sky epg config, but will have a look at the radio times epg you have and check the difference. I just hope i can flash the freextv cam to a joker and hope it lives up to it.

follow the guide and use the digital-everywhere support tools and the cable.reg file for ur transponders and u should be ok. a dbox service file for ur area is handy to get ur transponder frequencies

good luck
