yes there is a battery in the box, check the voltage with a multimeter, if it is flat you can get then or similar ones from maplins

The battery in a 1000 is a normal shaped battery normally made by sanyon and is white with sanyo in black, BUT they are soldered to the board with tags,if it needs replacing then go to maplins and get a round cr2032 battery AND holder and desolder the old batery and solder the new holder in place with wire making sure it doesnt short, then use the round batterys as they are just pop out.
I doubt its the battery tbh as you would most likely lose the netid on the box which would mean no channels.,
The trouble with the 1000 and 1000 1b (2000 also ) is there getting on a bit and they siuffer terribly with overheating, and it manifests often with the problem your having,
If its in a unit take it out and pout it where there is free airflow and see if it inproves,if it does then mod it and put a cpu fan in there
It could also be dodgy caps on the board, where they overheat they start to burn out and can give rise again to these symptoms,
See how you get on with the battery it should be around 3-3.3v any lower and its on its way out
