Default Atlantic Bird2

Hi,

Need help and advice.

I have been using satellite Broadband for years.
Now my Broadband supplier who were based in the UK until 2004, and relocated to Germany.
Have e-mailed me stating that my contract will terminate in July 2008.
Because of a legal dispute with BskyB, and that they cannot continue to provide skydsl to their customers in the UK.

Which means I have an 80cm dish locked onto Atlantic Bird2 connected to a PCI card in my PC.

Can I do anything with the Equipment I have, to watch TV on my PC?

Many thanks for your advice and help.....
Will my decoder card tune into the TV channels?
What tv channels are transmitted from Atlantic Bird2 ?

Hi mate,
The dish would be very good for receiving the new FreeSat, all you would need is one of their boxes, or a cheapo FTA box, and realign the dish to Astra 2 @ 28.2 E, It would mean that the dish would need to be moved from 8W so it would be moving 36.2 degrees in total, it is no big deal to move it yourself, if you are mobile, The dish would also need to have the elevation changed a wee bit, but that is nothing too difficult either.

Just a thought as to what you might do with the dish, if you liked you could get the Humax HD FreeSat box and have all the HD channels from FreeSat and it can be used to drive a motorised dish so you can view many more channels on loads of other satellites. The Humax HD FreeSat receivers are £145 from Southernsatellit, he will have them for the 13th inst, you can have a look if you do a search for his posts.

Hope this was of some small help to you. BTW there is not that much on 8W.

Very best regards Wez

It depends whether the card you have is suitable for digital satellite reception as well.

If you must watch TV on a PC then you need to get a satellite TV PC card such as a Skystar.

Many Thanks for your replies.

I can understand having to replace my PCI card to a Tv card.
Is there available a decoder box that i can plug my sat cable into and connect my PC via USB or Ethernet?

Also is there a cheapo sat finder to align dishes easier than point and hope.

again many thanks from a complete novice.

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do?

You can get a Skystar USB for a PC. It is an external box that connects to the LNB and connects to the PC via USB.

Basically it is a USB based satellite receiver.

The other option I think is a Dreambox which can be connected to the PC via Ethernet. The Dreambox is a fully fledged receiver in its own right, wheras the Skystar must be connected to a PC.

Yes, Maplin sell satellite finder meters, but they are pretty crap though. I always use my receiver these days, connected to a portable TV and utilise the receiver's built in meters.

Would you recommend the above product.

All i would like to do is watch the normal free channels.
Then in the future motorise my dish, to see what is out there.

Trouble is I`am a fiddler cant leave anything alone, I love technology but dont understand the first thing about it.

Regards and thanks

Melpen.

Hi,
Why do you want to view satellite TV on your PC, you can just buy a cheap receiver and watch it on your TV? Just curious as to why, thought that you might not have understood what I was suggesting before.

Very best regards Wez

Hi,
I spend 99% of my working week in my office at home, the other 1% I am either in Dublin or Jersey working
With 3 PC`s connected to various networks around the country.
I thought I could have the TV playing in the corner of one of the monitors, while I work. I work all unsociable hours. Customer driven.
Mind you my boss wouldn`t like it if he found out, but he`s in Newcastle.

I hope this answers your question.
