Hi just read up on all the forums stickys. Will tell you alot about the hardware.

Its all educational purposes only.

Personaly I like the dbox2.

As its basicaly a computer. Running linux.

It can be reprogammed or update easily.

Use a network cable and a pc.

As for image files it depends on your area and how good they work for you.

These boxes are cheap enough these days.

It really depends on what your intentions are.
If it's solely so watch tv and nothing else, Eurovoxmax v 2008 Starview thebox are the simplest boxes. They don't require any cards or any knowledge of the internals of the firmware.
If you want to have your box connected to the internet, stream movies from your PC to your TV, record to a network attached storage, stream mp3s from your PC to your TV, etc. etc. then get a dreambox. The 600-PVR is probably the better model but the 500 will do just as good a job and there are more images (firmware) available for you to play with.
Personally I would stay away from the cable company boxes. I've never had one and never will own one...they seem too high maintenance. The dreambox and newer Eurovox, Kryptview, etc. will auto update the keys when the cable company changes then and you don't need any cards or card readers/programmers/glitchers, etc to get them running. At most, you need a null modem cable and com port on your PC/laptop to flash firmware.
