Default help a greenhorn

Hiya guys, I've seen this forum and has been reading through it. All reading has done is confuse me even more. Can someone please help an idiot and break it to me really gentle. Why would I need another modem on my line? I'm not asking for anyone to break any forum rules just give me a general idea.

Thanks in advance guys!

Because you cant use or modify the one you pay for from the cable company as it will stick out like a tird on a white carpet!!!!
If you fancy modding a second modem for increased download speeds then this is the way to go BUT gone are the days of forcing configs to receive the maximum 20 meg download unless you get a mac address from a different segment of town that is actually for 20meg then you will only get what the mac limits too,
To be honest its a lot of hassles ,subscribe to 20meg and be done with it,i do
