Default LNB/Freesat question

I have a very old analogue receiver which I still use to catch Eurosport on Astra. (on an 80cm dish). I dont have and never have had Sky.

I was thinking of replacing it with a Freesat HD receiver.

The question is, do I have to replace the LNB?

If I do can you recommend one.

I have a single feed to the Rx.

Thanks..

If you're receiving Analogue German Eurosport, which has an English sound track, then your dish is pointing at Astra 1, 19E, so you will need to re-align it for Astra 2, 28.2E.
You could always add a second LNB and have both 28E and 19E.

Thanks for that info, had no idea was on Astra 1, (Eurosport is indeed in English) dish has been there that long....

The second LNB idea sounds just perfect, could I fit a dual LNB with that coverage?
I have really easy access to the dish as its low on the wall.

Thanks.

Your current LNB may not be suitable as it may not be "universal". The original analogue LNBs were single band, the universal have the capability to switch bands.

If your dish has a standard holder for a 40mm neck LNB then any standard 40mm neck Universal LNB would do the job. Examples include Inverto Silvertech 0.2, Smart Titanium 0.2, there are loads to choose from in the budget range.

A 6 degree offset bracket (or a lump of wood and some gaffa tape), would enable you to put a second LNB on for 28E if you wanted, the dish is plenty big enough.

What do you mean by "dual LNB"?

I suspect you mean a "monoblock" (Two LNBs joined together with a set spacing, with internal Diseqc switch), a monoblock would be no use, they only come in 3 or 6 degree varieties, 19E and 28E are 9 degrees apart.

If yo add a second lnb you will also need a DISEqC switch to allow switching between Astra 1 & Astra 2. This will allow transmission down one cable to the receiver

I can recommend MTi and Inverto lnbs should you need to replace your lnb.

I have purchased a few of the Inverto WhiteTech and they are fine for most satellites.

Have a look here, this guy is knocking out white techs out at £2 each http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZklemik

It may also be worth looking at getting another receiver like a Technomate 1000 or 5000 series receiver. These are patchable and they are opening Premiere on 19.2e (Astra 1) at the moment

Can see that two discreet LNBs would be required.

The offset bracket would work well then.

Thanks for interpreting my question better...!

Yes, you may be able to find a universal 6 degree offset bracket online from somewhere.

If not, as I said, it is possible to 'bodge' one. I think Analogue posted a picture of one of his dishes, cable ties were used to strap two LNBs side by side. With the necessary packing in between, the job would be a 'goodun'

Thanks Nano, have been looking at the Technomate and Humax HD receivers. Need to bone up on the spec differences before I jump for either.

Am I missing something ?
If the OP needs to purchase a new LNB to go with a digital receiver, and mounts alongside another LNB for Astra1, surely he will continue to use the analogue receiver on Astra1 - why would Diseqc and single-cable come into it? It's just two independant LNB-receiver setups that in this case happen to share a dish.

If the analogue receiver LNB menu states that the LNB is using 22Khz tone band switching, it may be his original query - do I have to replace the LNB - should be answered "No, just realign the dish and attach the digital receiver."
