Default leaving the UK

In a few months my family will be moving to the US to live in North Carolina. I've just purchased a FTA satellite dish for the rental house and was told that I could use this to watch freeview broadcast when we get to the US.

The dish is a Forcetec Star from Maplins and i need to know if this is possible or if not with this dish what.. My wife is a big Coronation Street and Eastenders fan and if she got her infusion of soap, life would be just that much easier

All help is appreciated for this definate newby!

Hi CarolinaKid,

I'm afraid you'll only receive what is being broadcast in the US. You cannot physically see Astra 28 satellite (which transmits UK freesat), from America, as it is below the horizon.

You may be able to get USA satellite 'free to air' channels using your dish over there, but the chances of them airing the British soaps I would say is quite slim.

I would sell the dish - I don't think it's really worth taking it. Checkout the situation either on a US sat forum, or see what the options are when you get there.

Leave all you sat kit here - its not worth shipping it out to yankland - many of the transmission standards are different.

The chances of getting Corrie in N Carolina are remote in the extreme.

You could investigate a UK based slingbox hosting company so you could placeshift UK channels via broadband. Not cheap, but viable if you have a decent bb connection at the far end and dont mind the cost.

Hi welcome to the forum,

Firstly, you would not be able to pick-up any of the UK Free to air satellite channels in the US, the satellite (28E) simply cannot be seen from there.

This doesn't mean necessarily that you wouldn't be able to watch 'corrie' but you would have to get it from a US satellite or cable network if it was even available.

The dish would be OK for use in the US, but the LNB would probably need changing as circular polarisation is used instead of linear.
I suspect that the receiver wouldn't work either as they use NTSC over there rather than PAL.

If you wanted to see what was available in the states www.lyngsat.com is a good source of info.

Also one of the US satellite forums may be able to give you a better steer. There's one called 'satelliteguys' or something like that.

i believe that BBC America air Eastenders but its encrypted & im not sure if anyone airs Corrie. if you were moving to New Zealand on the other hand you'd be able to watch both on UK.TV

I realise this post is pretty old and the member may already be in the US but both Corrie Street and East Enders are shown here by the CBC ( Canada ) and BBC US respectively. A FTA box with front end USB flash drive loading can be had for $100 and a 18" dish for about $50. A special bracket for $6 and another lnb for $15 will get you two sats which will bring in 700 channels including the above mentioned plus Setanta, all PPV movies and events, etc with no further investment. This is about £85.
