If you dont mind Vista as the O/S you can get some good deals in the bigger branches of Tescos! They often sell Acers - I bought my other half an Acer 2 years ago (from Comet of all places) and its a cracking little lappie (although its only got 512mb ram and needs upping at some point).

You can sometimes also pick up good bargains from the Dell website.

Nake sure you get at least 1 gig of RAM. (2 gig better for Vista though)

I just got a new lappy from Tescos, it was just under £500 for a Sony Vaio. It's good. I actually quite like Vista too, first time I have used it, but it seems OK so far. I ordered it from Tesco Direct and then picked it up locally.

I wouldn't get another Dell, the last one I had had driver conflicts and I still can't get it to work properly.

The only problem I had was lack of driver for my HP printer, but I managed to find one for a different model that worked. Also my Videoh media centre works OK too on Vista, it never worked on my old Dell running XP.

I have turned OFF something, can't remember what it was, but it stops it asking me stupid questions every 5 mins, whenever I do anything different.

Sounds like you've turned off UAC - User Account Control, turn that off and Vista won't ask you that you want a program to install or change settings etc.
