CSA plans to alert Ofcom on babies' TV

French TV regulatory body Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA) has confirmed its intention to alert UK regulator Ofcom to concerns it has over channels targeted at the very young.

The CSA is worried about the potential dangers represented by baby and toddler channels such as BabyFirst, aired in France since October 2007, as well as Baby TV. US-based BabyFirst was launched in 2003 and is backed by Regency Enterprises, and has expanded to the UK, France, Spain and Turkey. Baby TV is backed by News Corp’s Fox International Channels and has feeds to countries in Asia, Latin America and Europe.

Both broadcasting into France from the UK, the two channels thus escape any controls on television aimed at the very young in France that the CSA has in place.

The decision to alert Ofcom has been taken as France’s Ministry of Health does not recommend television for children under three years-old.
