Default Eurovox V 2008 or Eurovox Ultra (DM500-C)

Hi all,

I havn't got a cable box (Well, I acquired a Samsung SMT-2100C but I dont think it can be as good as the EV or DBox) so I have two main choices, a Eurovox Max V 2008 for £100 or Eurovox Ultra which I understand to be a clone of the DM500-C for £90.

What are the pros and cons of either box please?

So far I understand that :

dbox is smaller, faster CPU, runs linux, better pic quality, more tunable but needs more fussing over it when the cable provider changes codes and things.

Eurovox is easier to set up, plug and play.

I may be wrong but could I have peoples opinions please on what I should get?

thanks.

You've just about summed it up - I think the picture is better on the Eurovox than Dreambox, (even better on the d-box2).

In simple terms, The Eurovox Max V is a Cable TV box, the Ultra is a Linux Computer that thinks it's a cable TV box

Only thing i would say is that i got a better picture on my dreambox than my max V. Guess it must be different for different screens. (I using a 42" panasonic plasma so most SD looks a bit rubbish, lol)

Dreambox deffo needs more time to get running right but i enjoy messing about with it more than actually watching the telly!

tbh ... i'd say for ease of use scrap both the above and go for a kryptview ... I would always suggest never to go for clone boxes as these do not have the support behind them that the originals will have.

The kryptview allthough comparitavely new on the scene has the kind of support behind it that most are envious about and cost is normally around the £90 mark .... so quite cheap aswell ........... ok not linux based like the dreambox or dbox ... but imo .. this is overated ... lol you after all only need it to view channels ... lol ...

I see mixin's point about messing with the dbox (EV Ultra) I think I would enjoy that, another pro about the dbox I read a bit about is that you can record programs to a NAS drive, which if true is a massive advantage over the Eurovox.

Even though it sounds like i'm swaying to a EV Ultra, I still think I might just swoop for a V 2008 as it sounds like a) its rock solid reliable, and b) if it does break then the support on here is unrivalled to other boxes, even just by looking at the amount of threads on here. Plus it seems like I can record stuff from a V 2008 to my TiVo which is a big thing to me.

I dont' want to face the wrath of my other half if I need to fiddle with the Ultra all the time you see, however much I'd enjoy that :P

I would have to say that all the fta type boxes now seem to have a good level of support but imo the eurovox being the oldest has the biggest knowledge base and the most support outside the usual development teams. The dreambox being a linux box is a slightly more difficult box to tinker with and operate but being a linux unit has many more images and individual developers working on them.
