The firmware on the EV does not update automatically, so yes it is a good idea to invest in a NULL MODEM cable.

No it does not scan automatically for channels but the process is dead simple with easy to follow menus.

If you are buying your EV from a reputable dealer then it should come pre-flashed with the up-to-date firmware, this being the case it will auto-update the keys when they are rolled so you do not need to manually input them.

Before you ask - a good reputable shop is our very own lincsat's nick-nack shop (found at the bottom of the forum)

The box will come with instructions on how to scan the frequencies/channels in (you don't need to manually insert them).

Yes the firmware is a unified loader ie. it is the loader and the firmware combined - you can also use it to back-up your channel listings ('.cdf' : Channel Definition File) and/or edit them

The cable is an rs232 NULL MODEM cable, so you will need to either have a serial port (9-pin) on your PC or an rs232 to USB adapter cable. (but you will only need these if you need to update the software)

If you bought from lincsat then as far as I know it will be a 'plug n play' box ie the firmware is already on the box. You should just need to scan for frequencies/channels

Lincsat charges £1 for Null cable when buying with EV or £2 for cable only.

Most reputable sellers will provide the box "ready to go" not so with others, also look out for any warranties offered, the lesser reputable sellers seem to steer cear of providing a warranty worth bothering about.

Alot of reputable sellers are no longer selling the box as 'plug n play' after recent events. But definitely agree, having a warranty is very important, ideally min. 6 months

If you go to www_thechatterbox.cc and download their toolbar, you will find all the uptodate firmware under the Files/Fixes icon (hammer and spanner)
