Hi
As a newbie here I am still struggling with the jargon.What exactly is a patch and how does it work with a receiver?

A receiver patch is generally an unnofficial replacement software for it. Allowing the receiver to do things it wasn't originally intended for.

Most receivers are supported by the manufacturer and updated official software can be found on their websites. Also on their websites will be the software tools required to download to the receiver, for example using a null-modem cable.
