I did read it again smart**s* several times and he said the connection is the SAME as the one on the back of the EV , so by that then your saying the EV connection is VGA??????? Nooooo its 9 pin serial so hes saying he either has 2 male fittings or 2 female fittings, hence they wont go together, a simple gender changer would do the trick!!

Sorry mate but what your saying is wrong, its not the vga hes trying to connect to he simply has two cable ends of the same gender, hence no connection !!!

Cool Re: RS232 cable to MAX V connection problems !!!!!

I suggest you read the post correctly and then you will see what lincsat is saying is correct. The null modem serial lead has 2 female connecters on each end.The dell tower will probaly have no MALE serial connecter but a female VGA connection.SteveyT states this(Female connection to female connection). He is now using a USB to serial converter and a null modem serial lead to overcome this.
And by the way never heard of anyone using a gender changer or it been mentioned on this forum!!!

Thanks for all your help.....Eurovox now working !

Unable to use the RS232 cable with the USB adapter i purchased but a PCI Card with the right connections for the RS232 cable did the trick.

i think your cables rong. r232 and r232 null modem is different. heres what jonpc told me when i had this problem

This is mainly geared round those having problems flashing any device which requires a null modem cable. Some digital or satellite boxes may require a different cable.

To flash a you need a null modem cable. This is a type of rs232 serial cable, but not all rs232 cables are null modem cables. rs232 is a communications protocol which can use several cable wiring configurations.

This is the wiring arrangement in a null modem cable.

You can see that a lot of the pins do not connect straight through. You will not be able to see this on the cable itself because all the connections are encapsulated so you need to be sure that you buy the right cable from someone who knows what they are talking about! The important connections to successfully flash a receiver box are

2-----------------------------------3
3-----------------------------------2
5-----------------------------------5

This is what both en#s of the cable should look like - it's a female end at both en#s - holes not pins.

Another type of rs232 cable is a "straight through" cable where each pin on the connector is connected "straight through" e.g. pin 2 connects to pin 2, 3 to 3 etc See the diagram below. A straight through cable WILL NOT WORK ON some receivers - A STRAIGHT THROUGH serial cable looks exactly the same as a null modem cable from the outside but the wiring is completely different inside, like this

This is what the socket on your pc or laptop should look like - these are pins not holes!

If you are using a laptop you need to find a connector like the one marked 1 here - this is the serial connector.

NOTE: the connector marked 6 is a video out, not a serial connector.

If your pc hasn't got a serial connector you need one of these converters - shown below - (try Maplin dot co dot uk). You then plug one end of your null modem into the adapter and the other end into the satellite receiver (or whatever).

You then use a USB connector like the one marked 5 on the laptop picture above.

Here endeth the lesson - ask if there's anything I haven't explained!

The serial to USB adapters are hit and miss, they work for some ppl but not for others. For those it doesn't work for the only options are to borrow use of a PC with serial port or install a serial port on your own PC/laptop like steveyt did.
