Default From Sly to maplins

Hi,
A n00b really on sat stuff here, but you all did help me get my sat in a suitcase working great...so thanks for that. My next question is quite straightforward, my mate has a sly setup, but has got fed up paying for all the carp that is repeatedly shown (Yawn!)...so, can he just get any old digi sat receiver like the £30 one from maplins and just plug it in n scan for free TV....will his existing dish be ok for this, is it pointing at astra 2d (as i suspect it is)....will sly demand back the dish/receiver, he knows he wont get any sly prem stuff, but seems happy enough when i told him of the channs i picked up on my little sat in a box dish....all free any/all replies welcome.

Thanks,

DB.

Yes he can do this OR just watch all the ftv stuff on his digibox if he doesn't mind the epg with channels on it he can't get. Sly won't take back the box, it's his property

Hi will get all the FTA channels from the Astra and Eurobird satellites @ 28E, so tell him to go for it. He will not get the FTV channels, but he will get 4, more 4 and E 4, not that sure about five, but no fiver and five usa. There are loads of free channels there and all the ITV and BBC regions and if there is anything under the red button, on BBC, he can get it from the stream feeds for the bbc.

Very best regards Wez

Just to add, if you cancel your subscription, your card is as a ftv card so ch 5 will be receivable

As has been alluded, if the guy's minimum Sky subscription period has elapsed he can simply call Sky to cancel and continue to use the Sky box and card to watch about 200 channels --- no immediate need to buy a new box, unless he wants to avoid the nuisance value of the encrypted channels on the Sky box. If he wants a new box, he might consider the BBC/ITV freesat basic box at about £50 quid --- just plug into the Sky dish and play; or indeed the basic maplin or any cheapie FTA box. (Each option has pros and cons)
