Default Starting out

Hi guys,

Just like to say fantastic place.
I am just starting out down this road, i have most threads in the Cable on PC forum and just have a few basic questions please.

1. I was hoping to use server 2008 (workstation) 64-bit as my OS, is this wise?

2. Which cards are compatible? I have seen a member say he got Floppy/tv working - which was encouraging - what about the TT card?

3. Is it possible to have a DVB-C and DVB-S2 card in the same PC?

4. I have read a bit about hardcam and softcams is any method better than the other?

Many thanks guys, i will have purchased all the PC kit (excluding dvb-c card) by this pay day and then its time to stick it together and see. Just trying to understand everything properly so i dont make any expensive mistakes!!

wish i could help m8 but don't know alot about 1 or 3....i got a floppydtv expensive but totally compatible with vista mce....it seems easier than the tt1500 / 1501 from what i read but i can't really judge cause i've never had 1 of these.

softcam v hardcam - i've used both - softcam free but au seems a litltle difficult - channel change a little slower - hard cam + card, quick channel change and card with right img au no prob....again costs though.

hope this helps

Cheers twintown

I didnt know the differences as most of the talk on this forum that i found is regarding the TT1501 + softcams.
The advantages of floppydtv and hardcam route sound fantastic, just what i was looking for. I read a thread about issues with cams and programming and flashing them and tbh i was a bit lost.
How difficult/brave is it to go down this route?
Is it true twin tuners is possible this way?

twin tuners - 2 cards is possible as u can 'daisy chain' the floppydtvs - a bit pricey though....i got my system htpc with a single card but i got a subbed v+ box to record aswell.

cams are the dodgy things - when buying ask the retailer whether he could flash the joker 0.79 firmware for u, or at least check to make sure the cam will take the flash. the card programming is like for any box...

cheers

Got to say the floppys tuner is way better than the technotrends (although to be fair it is a budget card) I've used both with the floppy giving a much higher signal level 100% on the exact same set up, although as twintown says - pricey!!
