Default Virgin have Nagra 3 in the Pipeline!

Virgin Media have applied a code update which has crippled cable boxes across the country which were used for receiving cable TV illegally.

Cable boxes affected include the Eurovox, Nokia Dbox, Starview and Kryptview.

Users receiving cable TV illegally receive the error message “Please wait…code been updated” and no channels can be accessed.

According to industry analyst Ian Waller, “The change is causing false keys to be recorded on a ROM7 update, usually only 1 or 2 characters are wrong, this has been happening on ROM10 and ROM11 updates for the last year. A genuine card can handle the change, an emulator can not.”

Virgin Media applied a similar change around a year ago, and it took almost a week for firmware updates for chipped boxes to keep pace.

However, from reports coming in the changes by Virgin may not be a simple one off event, but instead being applied on a daily basis.

Although updates are available on the internet which try to keep track of the changes, if the code changes are being implemented on a daily basis this could make it very difficult for firmware updates to keep track.

The result would be a victory for Virgin in their battle against cable piracy, and an end to the widespread use of cable boxes for receiving illegal free cable TV.

On another note, Virgin is preparing the launch of Nagra Vision version 3 smart cards to further enhance network security for its Cable TV customers. These new smart cards will increase the encryption capabilities of the existing set top boxes and introduce new features for blocking access to non paying customers and enhanced "On Demand" security. It is rumoured that Virgin is planning to issue all customers with new smart cards as part of a "self install" policy. Watch this space for more information as soon as its available.

I think the first part is talking about the last keyroll method which I know as keyroll7, the "on a another note" bit is refering to new cards to yet to be introduced which it suggests will have new encryption/decryption routines.

With a rumour added to it but could be true if you have read last weeks news.

That is a syndicated news story from this site published in Early April and is absolutely nothing to do with N3!

It is about the change in the code update method and was fixed within a couple of days.

There is no evidence of an encryption change in the UK anytime soon, Ireland could have a change coming as they are already using N2 along side N1.

The Digitalspy story referenced refers to a change to IPTV and again nothing to do with an encryption change. In fact, given the cost of an encryption change and the announced switch to IPTV in a couple of years, I would say that an encryption change is very unlikely - there may still be a few tweaks to the existing system however.

i dont think it will be it for ths samsung 2110 as they are one of the latest boxes and they might be able to handle nagra 3 because if none of the boxes are able to handle nagra 3 then wats left, i dont think virgin will give out new boxes to all their customers.

Nagra2 to Nagra3 is a transition that is possible without box changes, it has been done for some satellite packages. One would presume the same to be true for Nagra 1. As yet the Nagra3 encryption has remained secure, so only official boxes with the proper sub would work.

I haven't had a letter from VM mentioning anything about a new card issue though, customers are normally for-warned.
