Default ram issues

i bought 2x1gb sticks of ram to replace my old single 512 mb stick. i went to install them and when i turned on my computer i was presented with a black screen and a high pitched beep going on and off from the speakers.

the new ram i bought is SAMSUNG 2GB 2 x 1GB PC3200 400MHZ DDR RAM MEMORY 2G
my old 512mb was pc3200 200mhz ddr ram. both 184 pin.
i have a half inclination that the new ram is under clocked at 200mhz but i cannot find anywhere in the bios to shift it up to 400 mhz.

im totally new to all this and google has got me this far, can anyone help me with the rest of the way?

thanks in advance.

Don't know very much about ram issues but I would check that the new ram cards are fully seated
In my bios the clock setting comes under Frequency Voltage Control / CPU FSB Clock

If it won't POST (power on self test) and boot into Windows, then it could indicate a problem with one or more sticks of the RAM. Take out both sticks then try one at a time. If they both work individually, then your motherboard might not support 2x1gig sticks. I've not go this problem but a mate has.

The other possibility is that the ram is high density and is not suppoted by your motherboard.

Have a look at the guide on the following page. It might help, but then again memory is a tricky thing.

Hi go to the abit's web site have a look though and see what ram your board supports and if there are any problems with running 2gig you may need to flash the bios but the web site will tell you that. also the beeps you here are to tell you that there is a problem as you have just put the memory in its telling you it not happy with it replace with your old ram and reboot till you find a answer .

Motherboards can be a bit picky about which RAM they will accept and which they won't. Best to check the manufacturers recommendations. As was said, you might need to flash your bios to the most recent version.
