Default Splitting a Sky cable

Hi Guys

A quick question hopefully one of you will know the answer to.

I'll try and be as brief as possible

My neighbour and I live in a complex with a community sky dish and we both have sky boxes from previous homes and are looking to connect up, however we have been told there is only one LNB (think that's right) still available. We were wondering if we could split the cable as it comes down to our apartments and still both watch the channels we wanted independently?

Many Thanks

No, it is not possible, I'm afraid.

This is because the receiver has to select either H or V polarity, and High or Low Band. You can only switch in one combination at a time.

To get more feeds the engineers would need to upgrade the IF distribution system to provide more outputs.

I take it that you are not in the UK?

How many people are already sharing the dish?

No, I'm in Spain. I'm not sure how many people are using the dish, the community president just told us that there was only one free connection left. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Put your own dish up.

Normally with shared dishes the LNB fitted to the dish is a quattro. The quattro LNB then feeds a multiswitch, with a number of outputs.

However expansion of the system to quite a large number is possible as the outputs from the quattro LNB can be split, to feed another multiswitch.

All it would need is for them to call a satellite installer out and quote for expanding the system. Whole blocks of flats (hi-rise) can be fed from one large dish I believe.

I suggest you have a word with the community president and see what you can arrange, as technically it should be perfectly feasible to expand.

Have a read of this page:-

http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/multiswitch.htm

with a single multiswitch you can go up to 32 for example.
or with a splitter on the LNB with two switches will give you 64 outputs.

and for educational purposes only:- (for 168 receivers)

Oh, I just remembered another option and that is a 'Priority Switch'

Not ideal, but may be OK for an interim solution.
