Default I'm confused

Hi all,

I'm doing some research and i've been reading up on what is visible to cable providers via the internet connection and am a little confused. I have read that it is possible to increase the internet connection by replacing the config file, but by doing this and changing the mac address of your PC surely a cable company can pick you out easily because other devices connected like your wireless router and all wireless connections will also have a mac address that would be visible and registered elsewhere.
when I talk about other wireless devices I mean things like a PSP, PS3 wireless laptops and wireless routers etc. You would have to be really on the ball to remember to clone all mac addresses or am I missing something - can anyone shed any light on the situation?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

It's simple, we change the Mac addresses that's associated with our hardware/devices. If you are running a cloned modem straight into your desktop for example, we change the Mac of our network card, if you are using wireless, then we use a random Mac on the router.

Jojo - sorry, what do you mean by a random mac?

I have just read that if you are using a wireless router (or any router) that anything connected to it will be hidden - the only mac address the cable company will be able to see is the routers and modems mac address. So if for example you cloned the mac address on the router and used one of the config files that gives faster internet they won't be any the wiser?

You need a valid Mac address for your cloned modem to work, then the modem requires a mac address to lock onto your router in order to communicate with it, so you just pretty much use a random mac on the router instead of one from your desktop network card, then you should be reasonably safe from detection.
