Well as one way to kill a satellite receiver is to disconnect the LNB whilst it's powered, to avoid the possibility of someone snagging the cable and pulling the connectors apart accidentally, do NOT use RF (Belling-Lee, as found on TVs, VCRs etc), as you said use screw-on F-connectors and a back-to-back F-connector adapter to make the join. Also make sure the braid does not short with the centre core when fitting the plugs.

Anyway managed to get a box off fleabay and thought i would investiagte using wht i have already. Im sure lots of other people will be in the same situation, especially when freesat gets more channels and more people move over to it and want to utilise their existing sky dish ect.

Anyway been on the cable forums for a while now eurovox dbox ect and thought id give this satellite a go out of interest. Maybe one day il change dishes and maybe get more lnb's so i can recieve more satellites, but for now I'll just use foxsat and existing sky dish as a starting point.

My tv has got HDMI ports...3 of them infact. So there shouldn't be a problem there.

Also one more quick question. the satellite coaxial cable has been cut inside the house, would 2 rf plugs be ok to join it or do i have to use F connectors and an adapter. Or is there another way which would give better results.

Indeed Currys and the rest of them in that lot do try to insist that you need to have their "experts" check if your dish is OK for Freesat, for allowing them to do this they will charge you £80 and if you have not got a dish they will charge you £100, they are real rip off merchants. There are loads of posts and threads on other forums which are just about this subject. Freesat are no hlp in this area either as they seem to say that you need to have the install, but that is not the case, you can buy a box on it's own there is no obligation to get any of the main stores have their men do the job.

As suggested in another post, you would be much safer to have the connection made with a female F connector, Maplins do them, but you could get one in any satellite shop. The reason given for not starting up a box without the LNB connected is very valid one and either the LNB or the box can be fried doing this, the same applies to CB radioes, never connect them without the aerial connected.

Well you only have one day left to go and you will be very happy with your new box I am quite sure, you are getting it at a very god time, just when ITV HD are going to start their service for real. There are also other free HD channels to be viewed from other satellites, but you would need to get motorised dish for them, something to consider in the future.

Good luck with the new box and I really hope the dish is OK for you.

Very best regards Wez

thank you.. will report back when all is set up!

as for currys ect..i actually chose a sony hdtv for £999 then asked for the foxsat to go with it... when they insisted i had installation at £80 and if i didn't i couldn't purchase the box... i walked out, leaving the assistant a bit red faced as they had the tv ready to go for me. they really wouldn't back down on the installation thing...said it was their policy and a deal they had with freesat. suppose it was their loss in the end though.

Good for you, I would have done the same, its time to give freesat
to Tesco to sell, reminds me of the balls up with postcodes with freesat
I dont think in law currys could refuse the sale, after all a yagi is a yagi
in freeview, I am not surprised currys are closing half there stores
with that attitude, Maplins would never try that one on, but then Maplins are real with real people, not con merchants.

Don't get me started about Maplins - been to a African chap this week, he was told at the Lincoln store that he could get Nilesat with a 60cm dish!

Whoops, some of Currys staff have already defected to Maplins it seems,
suppose you can get nilesat with a 60cm in Egypt, but you are right poor advice to sell in a difficult climate,

I've put him on Hotbird, he seems happy with the Arabic channels on there - He's from Morocco, so Arabic and French is his native language.

well...just a quick update... box has arrived and been set up. all ok, scanned the freeview channels and found 72 channels. on some of the screenshots on another post..i noticed ther was a few hd channels in the hd freesat list. some were test channels ect but they were there. i only recieve 1 hd channel in freesat mode..bbc hd.
am i missing something or is this normal for my setup (ex sky zone 2 dish)

Also in non freesat mode theres 4/5 satellites what i get a decent strenght/quality on so ive scanned them all individually (this takes quite a long time) and received hundreds of channels. ive scanned the encrypted channels too but when i press the scramble button (blue) in the channel list every scrambled channel is listed under "NDS". I nboticed on the screenshots in the other post that different channels had different encyption types and wandered why i wasnt seeing this. dont suppose it matters as im never going to watch them..im just trying to understand everything as im new to all this.

The satellites ive scanned are:
freesat 28.2e
astra 1 19.2e
astra 1e3a 23.5e
astra 2 28.2e
eurobird1 28.2e
sirius 5.0e (is this normal?)

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

Hi mate you should be able to receive some other HD channels from the other satellites that you have there, there are FTA ones on some of them and if you have a look here http://en.kingofsat.net/find.php?que...l&filtre=Clear

You should also e able to receive a load of free channels from the satellites, other than the ones @ 28.2/28.5E and some of them are quite good. I am sure that you are very happy with the box, you can now see all the Euro Cup games in HD, I am not sure if you are aware of it or not, but ITV HD is going to launch on Saturday and it will be avaible from the ITV1 channel, when the prompt comes on the screen you hit the red button and then you will be taken to the HD channel.

I am glad that you have the box and have it set up and working OK, have fun and enjoy the delights of HD.

Very best regards Wez
