help with ntl/virgin 250 plz

hi there i am a total novice and stumbled accross these forums trying to find out info, heres my problem

my mam had a ntl cable 250 modem and got free internet through it but last week stopped working. it still lights up ect but doesnt get internet the question is what can she do to get it back working if its possible,
also she has a brand new spare virgin 255 modem how can we get that receving internet? also i hear that you need mac codes ect. does it need chipping or do u download software onto it ect? like i said im a compleate novice so any help would be greatly welcomed!

1-is it still on contract with nthell if so then you can not touch it m8
2- have you any files yet ?????
