My sister has been advised by Vurgin Media that they will install a Fibre Optic connection into her home if she chooses to take their service.
![]() She's asked me to get hold of a genuine Starview Box/Box Super. My question is: does anyone know what type of connection is fed into the receiver by VM? Do they have a new receiver that takes a fibre feed or is it a copper feed into the receiver (a box on the wall with copper for voice and video and fibre for broadband) ? Also, does the Starview have a fibre input? I can't remember seeing one and mine's a bit awkward to get out of the TV stand. Any help will be gratefully received!! ![]() LP

fible optic wires are just wires that use light instead of actuall metal to tranfer infomation. i think the end bit that go into the VM box is normal. i dont see why they wll have a different fibreoptic box.
reading this about broadband, http://groups.google.com/group/uk.te...a2b63d75fb85ca i think your going to use the same box. also its best for them to do what tehy gotta do THEN buy the starview box. |

fiber only feeds the master cabs and mux's and is then converted from light wave to rf that is then fed down the coax (copper wire). as far as i am aware no uk communications firm are or are planning to feed fiber optics to residential premasis. it wasnt long ago that bt and a few others lodged a complaint against virmin about exactly this with their wording about how their services are delivered.

Thanks to everyone for their input.
My question arose because I've been reading about 50MB speeds for broadband being the next target. I figured they would probably want to feed fibre into the home for that kind of speed. I guess you're all right - even if they do feed fibre into homes, they would still feed the video and voice on copper. Cypchris, just to clarify, fibre can be bent, but not as much as copper - the minimum arc for a fibre cable is 1.5 - 2 inches. I work in a computer environment and we have lots of fibre, all of it needing to be bent - not as much as the 2in. minimum, but bent all the same. I'm sure if they decided to feed fibre into homes, it would be no different to feeding it into commercial premises. |
