Hey mate,

Is this HDD your primary drive and what OS do you have?
If you run XP and this is a secondary drive then run diskmgmt.msc and it should tell you the layout of the HDD, could be that the partition on the HDD is only this size and you have 270gb of unused space. Other common issues can be a BIOS limitation (if its v old) or the jumper settings on the HDD..

Cheers

The diskmgmt.msc command works with Vista too so have a look and see what it says with regards your drive. I take it that if this HDD eternal then it's not your primary drive, therefore you may want to switch it over to "slave".

Also believe it or not, MS Vista doesnt support some older HDD's fully, more information on HDD compatibility can be found at the usual hitachi websites but the deskstar is a good drive and dont think its incompatible so you should be alright there. I take it that your external case is connected via USB, you may want to check the drivers for it.

Another thing you can check is your BIOS, is it seeing the HDD ok?

Alrighty, and via the diskmgmt.msc, you cant see any "unallocated" space, you dont have an option of extending the primary partition if you right mouse click it?

Do you know the model of the drive?... you would think Vista would make life simple..

Also, if you right mouse click within diskmgmt.msc on the drive it self, bring up properties and select Volume, what details does it give for "Capacity" and "Unallocated Space"

I've only seen the 128gb limit on macs before so I'm not too sure why Vista cant see it, especially if it's in an external casing and connected via usb. How old is your machine in general, I take it is relatively new as you're running Vista.

Have you checked your BIOS, ensure there are no switches set in that for USB devices etc? Plus of course that its recognised the HDD
