Hong Kong broadcaster TVB has taken capacity on Eutelsat’s Eurobird 9 to launch a bouquet of Chinese-language channels for European satellite homes, including a channel for its "nostalgic" programming (pictured, left).
TVB’s subsidiary The Chinese Channel will offer five channels including TVBS Europe, which offers Hong Kong drama series, local news and Chinese community events in Europe. Four speciality channels, first launched in the first quarter of 2008, will launch alongside the flagship service. News channel TVBN, entertainment news service TVB Entertainment News, “nostalgic content” service TVB Classic and TVB Lifestyle all broadcast in Cantonese. The Chinese Channel is targeting the half-million Cantonese-language speakers in Eurobird 9’s pan-European footprint. The bouqet will be marketed under the slogan “Give me Five!” Anthony Ho, controller of the Overseas Satellite Operations division of TVB said: "To achieve our milestones, Eutelsat provided considerable technical assistance and advice to TVB, enabling the five channels to be on air in less than three months. Without this exceptional level of support we could not have kept to our very tight schedule. We look forward to further developing our collaboration with Eutelsat into the future, and also to bringing new television services with Mandarin Chinese content to Europe."
