News Corp sniffing Premiere again?
Germany’s pay-TV operator Premiere is again the subject of take-over speculation. On June 12 its shares rose almost four per cent. News Corp already holds 25.01% of the business and Premiere itself is predicting “enormous growth” in the German market.
Germany is scheduled to switch its analogue TV signals off by 2012, and perhaps earlier if the transition goes well. Premiere has also switched its conditional access supplier for new subscribers to NDS, and Premiere now says that it is targeting 10m subs in the longer term. Michael Boernicke, Premiere’s CEO, said last week that as many as 1m homes were viewing Premiere illegally and that he anticipated some 200,000 would convert to paying subscribers during Q4/08 and Q1/09.
