Default Newbie, please help

These are very basic questions:

What is the difference between a smart card writer/reader from a programmer?

Do I need them both, or just one of them to start learning about catv/satellite stuff?

How can I recognize the difference between cards (funcard and official cards)?

I've read the tuts, but as these questions are so basic, they don't even seem to mention it.

Thanks you.

the infinity phoenix does both, smart card reader writer , and programmer ...it is a multi purpose programmer

differeence between the cards is sometimes pretty easy as the card has it written on it i.e funcard 2 4 5 6 etc..titanium i-2 opos jee the list is endless

official cards or moscs as they are know can differ with a picture but the basically do a better job than funs, tits, etc there are 3 types rom 10, 11, and 110, the latter of the 3 is mainly used in ireland atm

Thanks spikebaby for your quick reply!

Do you know this model, CardMan 3021 USB from OMNIKEY?

It'll be pretty hard for me to get one of those Infinity's here in Brazil.

They sell the above reader/writer in my area so how do I know if it is compatible with phoenix? The specs does not mention it.

Is there any protocol or standard that tell us if it is compatible?

Thank you.
