Default Complete newbie

Hi guys

My gaming pc blew up a couple of weeks ago and as I have a playstaion 3, I decided that I do not need a gaming pc but as I had 2 500gb hard drives on the pc ful of films and music I still need a pc so I have decided to build a multimedia pc with a tv card. The card I have been looking at is this one "Hauppauge WinTV HVR 3000 DVB S DVB T PAL" at a cost of £80. The spec is very high and will anable me to turn my pc into a satelite hard drive recorder including hd pictures. What I would like to know is if anyone has actually used it and is it as good as it looks.

The other question is what chanels and how many are there availble using a tv card of this type? is it possible to get payper view channels as well?

And is there anyway of getting payper view stuff free? I know I should not ask this but I have paid for SKY TV for the last 10 years paying a fortune for a sub standard service and to be treated like sh** by there customer service line so I think they owe me.

Welcome to the forum iwantmemum118. I hope you find her.

To start with, the card you mention is only SD tv and will not get the HD channels other than BBC HD which transmits in DVB-S at present. Most HD transmissions are DVB-S2 and you will need that type of card for HD.

One that seems good although I dont have one is the Skystar HD2.

There are literally thousands of tv and radio channels available from about 20 satellites depending upon where you are in the world. Most of the channels are encrypted and, in general, you wont get them without subscribing. Dont expect to get ppv channels without paying at least in the long term. There are times when encrypted channels can be opened by decoders but they can change at any time and usually when you are recording or watching a special film.

What you are trying to do is entirely feasible and with a bit of reading you should get good results.

Cheers for the reply, I will had a look at the Skystar HD2 and looked on the technisat website, I was put off by the lack of conectivity on the card, but I did not know about the two different types of HD signal, now I know that I may have to reconsider.

Take a look at the BYOPVR (as in build your own PVR) site. There's a brill PVR app called GBPVR which is free and has a very good support forum
