Default RAM problem or motherboard

Hi all,

have a toshiba laptop, and when I add memory (512mb DDR2) and check if the memory is working I get a faulty on the memory test (using pccheck v6), nothing strange but I have checked several sodimms and still get faulty memory on the test.

Yes, the memory I am using is compatible,

Any thoughts anyone please???

Does it come up only when you use it in one socket, or does it happen in both (most laptops usually have 2, 1 may be hidden under the keyboard)?

Personally I use Passmark's Burn In Test pro, does the job perfectly for me...

If you're fitting them in pairs, are they all matched frequencies? if not then that could be one reason why. If they are matched, then it is most likely a motherboard fault, not a cheap fix!!!

Another thing, the software could be at fault, I've known BITPro to throw out error after error with certain motherboard chipsets, the computers were fine, but the software, even the latest shiny & new version, just wouldn't pass the tests!!!

Does the laptop actually suffer in any way though? As I say it could just be the test software, try running the laptop as normal for a week, if there's no BSOD's and nothing out of the ordinary happens (bar being a bit faster), then I'd say the laptop & memory's fine and dandy...

I thought it was a RAM problem because when I try to reload the OS (winxp pro from an original recovery disk) the system hangs at about 52%, this from my past experience points to a RAM fault, have tried winxp retail disk and it loiads a bit further but BSOD???

I agree, I have had the same experiences and found it to be the ram, but in your case, I think it is the motherboard I'm afraid if all the memory you have tried has come up with the same results...
