Default Impossible question sorry

Hi,

I recently bought a caravan and the previous owner left a satellite dish and reciever in it. Unfortunatly I have no way of knowing the make there are no marking on it. (I searched on the internet it looks like the maxview ml020 but without the name.)

The dish is about 60cm again no markings except a sticker stating universal lnb in german.

When i set everything up i found astra 19 and 28 and hotbird.

I can get every channel from asia, africa, germany, italy, france perfectly i just can't get bbc, itv or anything english which is slightly annoying.

I can get signal strength and quality on the display over 80% on the on screen menu but the screen still shows no signal on english channels.

Any help would be great.

Probably got everything wrong and giving you no real info soz for this.

Hi, and welcome to Techwatch,

LOL, not an impossible question at all ( I hope not anyway)

You need to point the dish at 28E.

If you go to the installation menu, select the 10773H transponder and view the signal quality, you need to adjust the dish until you get good quality. Then do a rescan, you should get BBC1 London.

For where to point the dish look here:-
www.dishpointer.com see where the yellow line goes.

Next time you have a play, and manage to get a good signal, clamp the dish there for a minute, then make a note of say 5 channels that you can actually watch (may need to rescan) and their frequencies. Then go to kingofsat channel search and find out what satellite it was.

Once you know where the dish is, it is really easy to swivel round to the one you actually want. Look at the "satellite Arc" in the Stickies.

Also remember, the receiver DOES NOT know which satellite it is pointing at, and many transponders frequencies are used again and again around the arc, this can sometime fool newbies into thinking that they are aligned to a particular satellite when they are not. Looking at what channels (and their freqs) you can get confirms one way or the other.

Hello daddyov8.Welcome to techwatch. You are very welcome.
It looks like your dish is on 19e.You need to move your dish a little to the east ie left 28e is easy to find, that is where the english channels are.I am sure that someone will be along with better info.

Thanks for the replies.

Few things that confuse me:

1. when the receiver says its connected to astra 28.2 it could be picking up 19 or hotbird instead?I have over 80% signal and quality showing on the astra 28.2 but still can't get reception?

2. The satellite connected shows in the menu's something like 200 channels, I get good reception on say 70% of these why don't I get the same reception on the others or is this something to do with point 1 above?

3. should you be searching by channel and frequency not satellite?

4. When you rotate the dish you get strong signals at various points, looking at the menu's how do you know which satellite your picking up. The signal meters show up and down on various satellites but also as points above on certain channels within one?

Thanks for all your help i may get somewhere soon.

Answers:-

1. Yes

2. Could be, or a number of others reasons, but most likely because of 1.

3. Both. Pick a satellite, choose a frequency then try and find a signal on it, then scan either a single transponder (ideally) or the whole satellite once confirmed you have the right sat.

4.See what channels you get when you scan, and then look them up on kingofsat channel search utility, and compare parameters inc transponder freq.

By the way, you are virtually there already, as you have managed to get a good signal to start with. Just a case of finding out where you are and making the necessary adjustments accordingly.
