Default Anixe HD to screen Olympics in HDTV

German HDTV channel Anixe HD will screen the summer Olympic Games from Beijing free-to-air on Astra (19.2° East) in high-definition.

From August 9 to 24 a total of more than 100 hours of Olympic programmes will be shown daily from 19:45 CET, the Munich-based broadcaster announced. Anixe HD has acquired the television rights for the sports of mountain-biking, equestrian, archery, triathlon, sailing, surfing and marathon. The competitions will be broadcast time-shifted due to the time difference so that viewers can watch the programmes during evening prime time. Satellite operator Astra Deutschland is supporting the HD channel’s Olympic broadcasts with promotions and marketing activities.

Anixe HD is the only television channel in Germany which will screen the Olympics in high definition. In Austria and Switzerland the Games can be seen in the new technology on the HDTV channels recently launched by ORF and SRG respectively. Anixe HD, which finances through advertising and sponsorship, offers an entertainment schedule with movies, series, sport and children’s programmes. The free-to-air service is available on Astra, cable networks and ADSL.

It baffles me the reaction to this by ARD, they have the transponder space for a weekend Eins Festival HD.

Why cant they retool that for Olympics in HD.

Ah well least its going to be free to air in HD from two locations now
