Help With A SB5101E

i recently bought a modem off ebay, and when it got here i plugged it all in and got it ready to use but it never connected to the internet, i messaged the guy back saying this and he said it needs modding, i dont have a clue what that is, was wondering if anyone here culd help me out ??, also the reason i bought a new one is because the one i have now, the ethernet port on it just died a couple of days ago, it just doesnt recognize any cable i try on any computer, so if anyone could help with that, a solution for either would be great, because at the moment im having to take turns to piece with the internet and its getting very annoying :P, any help would be great thanks.

the modem i bought off ebay was the SB5101E, and the modem i have now with the ethernet port problem is a Scientific-Atlanta WebSTAR 2000 series Cable Modem.
