Default Permissions Error ----- Help!!!!!!!!

Hi all,
I am trying to change the write permissions on my dbox for the keys so I can FTP the new ROM's but everytime I try and change the 'execute' from red to green in the box I get a message saying "UNKNOWN ERROR 256" everytime I press OK and it wont let me change it.
I have tried changing the rights on other permissions which are red on the execute option and I get the same error message as soon as I press OK.
Any help to solve this prob would be gratefully appreciated before it drives me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Paul, Thanks for your info.
The reason I thought they needed permission is that when I try and transfer the files over and then click 'overwrite' it comes up 'Transfer Failed'.
I have done it on another 2 boxes no with no problems at all so I don't know where it's going wrong.

Delete the whole keys folder if you have a working one ready to transfer back.......otherwise, do as Paul says, reflash and start over.
