Question A few Neewbie Q's

Hi

I'm currently looking in to getting a modded cable modem, I've seen the modems on ebay for bout £30. Is any particular modem better than the rest?

Regarding the legality of it all, How safe is it to use a modded modem, am i likely to have vm bangin on my door?

And finally mac addresses, have a couple of friends who live between 5-10 away would these be able to search for mac addresses? i'm in an ex-ntl area and i think they both live in ex-tw areas so would there macs be compatable?

Thanks for any info, sorry if you've answered these questions thousands of times b4

I'm not sure which is considered the best, but the Motorola modems tend to sell for more as they can be used on other countries cable networks, but the Ambit ones only work on VM.

If your concerned about the legality of using a modded modem - I've never read about VM chasing an individual that uses a modded modem, but there's a first time for everything!
Also read up on spoofing your MAC address.

As for using a mac address from a different area, I don't think that it will work, but I'm sure that someone else will be able to advise.

Thanks for the reply

Will look into Mac address spoofing seems simple enough, Just need to find about acquiring mac address' off the net.
My first cable modem was a sb4100 which worked without problems so may go for a motorola.
Rather annoying that the only reason im considering getting a modded modem is because i send most of the time being capped by vm, cant even d/l a xvid movie without be capped down to 1mb

Maybe a typo by Billy but you MUST use a mac from a different area as if you use one on the same network (UBR) then as you are logged on, the real owner of the mac will be kicked off and it will cycle like that until the owner phones up to complain something is going wrong.

Your right aidso.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself. What I meant was that my understanding is that although what was N*TL and Telepest are now all under the VM banner they are still operating under different systems. Therefore a MAC address sniffed from a N*TL area won't work in a Telewest.
Anyone confirm this?

To get a MAC to work it must be from the same area but from a different segment (UBR).
