From Irish Daily Star 21/7/08.
IRISH people living in Britain will soon be able to avail of new free-to-air station being launched by RTE. The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) will examine a proposal from RTE on the channel today. RTE International is understood to be on track to launch later this year if it gets the green light from the BCI. It is aimed at the Irish emigrant community and will broadcast programming from RTE One, RTE Two and TG4. The station — which will be available on satellite service Free Sat - will run Irish news and current affairs programmes as well as lifestyle shows for 12 to 14 hours a day. However, broadcasting rights arrangements with the GAA, for example, mean there will be little or no sports content on RTE International. Legislation passed by the Dail in 2006 explicitly required RTE to provide a service for the Irish emigrants. This may be in the wrong section. If so, my apologies.
