Default Starview flash problem

Hi Guys/Gals

I Start out saying I ain't really got that much of a clue of what i'm doing and/or talking about

A friend of mine has a starview box (1/original) and on another friends advice he upgraded the software (flashed it?).
However, when he did this he used the software (download/flash?) for the Sarview Box (the predecessor to his starview box).Yep I may be bad but this bloke is 10 times worse!!

Now he wants me to try and sort it out...

His starview starts up but displays the Starview Box logo and goes no further so he cant get to the menu to perform a master reset

He is using a GT Rom Loader (whatever the hell that is!!!!) and when he trys to re flash his starview it wont display his model in the device list (I hope to god this all makes sence when I go round to try to sort it).

So, what should I look at doing.

I think I may need to reinstall his GT Rom loader so that i can re-flash his starview. or do i just need to make a small adjustment like deleting a file or changing a setting

Please note that I am a COMPLETE novice here (like you couldn't tell)!

As you don't know whether you have a clone or genuine SV1 you can use Cryptstar257, as it works fine on both. You will need to unplug the SV hit download wait a few seconds and plug the SV back in. This is because you have a bad flash as it has as you stated the wrong firmware on it at the moment.

You may have to try this a few times before you get it to flash or you may get lucky on your first attempt.

Your main problem however is the Gtromloader, even if you delete it and re install you will still have the same problem. This is because you have a corrupt registry entry. I could tell you how to fix it but it is a bit long-winded and I don't like messing with reg files unless it is absolutely necessary. To save this hassle do you have access to another PC for the flash procedure. If you do download Gtromloader V4.00 and Cryptstar257 and flash it from that.

Yes I do have acess to another comp. Its an original SV as far as I know as it has been flashed before using Gtromloader without any problems. The guy who knows all this stuff is unavailable in a pub.

Okay Just to let you now (anyone who is interested that is) I Re flashed the SV1 with version 4.0 using Gtrom Loader, my lap top and the trick suggested of unplugging the SV box starting the download then waiting a few sec before turning the SV on. It downloaded the software BUT once completed and plugged back into the tv the SV wouldn't start, it just displayed a '-' symbol scrollling across the LCD display over and over again.

so i did the same trick but downloaded a earlier version of the software and the SV worked fine. Does this mean its a clone (i'm pretty sure that the number of vent slats and position of the scart AND the remote confirmed to a genuine starview tho)?

Gtromloader still displays the model number as GR1503 (or summut like that) instead of STARVIEW which was throwing my friend but I just ignored it, I live by the motto that "if it works, who cares!"
