http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asi...ic/7522952.stm Names used for children in New Zealand include: Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii Violence Number 16 Bus Shelter Midnight Chardonnay Benson and Hedges But these were refused: Yeah Detroit Stallion Twisty Poi Keenan Got Lucy Sex Fruit Fat Boy Cinderella Beauty Blossom Fish and Chips (twins) I presume there's sane reason for these insane names?? |

Apparently Midnight Chardonnay and the no. 16 bus shelter have something to do with the moment the children were conceived. Don't know about the others.

Yes, I had a funny feeling that there must be some kind of tribal tradition involved relating to naming after the first thing seen.
Not convinced it works so well in the modern world, though - wasn't the original naming tradition about imbuing the attributes of the object seen in the child, ie, Mountain Wolf, Running Deer? I can only guess we're due to see the following names as well: Birthing Ball Full Ashtray Sexy Nurse Ugly Doctor Black Telephone Hospital Ward Angry Husband... |

I seem to remember an American Indian, who's son asked him why his three siblings got their names.
The chief replies 'Your sister Running Water, has her name because she was conveived near a stream...your other sister, ' Beautiful Flower, has her name because she was conceived near a field of beautiful flowers...and your brother, Strong Eagle, has his name because an eagle flew over when he was conceived. But why are you asking these questions 'Hole in Rubber' ?..... |
