Question File to big to copy to disc?

Hi guys, I would really appreciate some help as I am not used to copying discs although thought it would be more simple, maybe it is, I have quite a few videos I want to copy to discs as I am going away next week, Nearly all are between 699mb and 950mb, the problem is when I go to copy one to a single disc it appears they are too big, I have Nero and power producer?, I thought by changing the format it would work,
for examle one file is 701mb in properties the disc i wanted to use is 700mb, the file says dvdrip and is an .avi yet when I set VCD it tells me the file is now 982mb so I tried DivX that is 1148mb so I thought right I will use a DVD 4.7gb but tells me it is now 7064mb, what am I missing apart from a brain, I know these are different formats but surely I do not have to use 2 discs, must at least fit on the DVD if not the CD/R, could the added mb on VCD be from the menu system or something that power producer inserts, Is there any other programs or something I need to do differently,
I would appreciate any help with the above, I also have one more small problem, with a couple of the vids using windows media player it says could not play file and something about that it may be the wrong file type or codec, These are all Axxo/Klaxxon vids if you are familiar so are quite reliable and all are AVI's, is there anyway to get them to play or are they bad downloads, Thanks for the help

If you use Nero Vision, you can set the target disc size and it will automatically adjust the compression to suit. Power Producer should have a similar option, or a compression (bitrate) setting which can be manually adjusted until the estimated size falls below the disc space. Another way is to author to a directory on the HDD, then DVDshrink will reduce the size to fit.

I'll bet those are recent titles, and suggest a website to visit to unlock the file. Only the brave or anti-virus/malware confident would risk it
