Question Coaxial Cable Problem!

I have just setup my satellite and after much fumbling about have got it all working on on a short cable! However when I have connected to the 20m cable running through the house theres no signal! If I have shorted the coaxial cable do I have to replace the whole cable or just corrrect the short and try again? Having replaced the cable once im not sure im doing it correctly? Thanks

Welcome to TW,

It may just be the connectors/terminations. If the cable is damaged and you located it, you can use 2 x F type connectors and an in line coupler.... although would be best to run a new feed.

Does it still work on the shorter cable ?
If you have a short circuit caused by braid touching the core in the F-connector, simply correct this and try again.
Coax can be damaged by making bends too tight, and also the IF signals sent from the LNB to the receiver don't "go round corners", bends should be radius 10cm or greater. If a right-angle bend has been made, damaging the insulation between the core and screen or the core itself, it will need replacing.

Smile Re: Coaxial Cable Problem!

Having replaced the cable once and got it working on the 20m I then fed it thro the arm of the satellite and insulated the end but it stopped working..I have checked it with the local digital terrestrial TNT service and works but guess its a different frequency! As that cable runs alongside the sat. one would that have an effect? Fitted the F-sockets myself and seems no problem with any braids touching the inner core and unplugged everything while working on the cable! Guess a another new feed with a bit more attention required!! Thanks

The short cable is working fine but when connected to the long one theres no signal at all! Dont think any obivous sharp bends in the run as relatively easy to pull it the 20metres even with the other cable in it! Didnt realise how delicate coaxial was! The last setup I had the cable squashed in between a closed pvc window frame... Guess I was lucky but it was only 5metres.

Hi, I don'r=t know what cable you are using, but the approved foam dielectic types are best as they are more difficult to crush. Eg wf100 or pf100.

Will try making new connections otherwise replacing the cable.. Just wanted to make sure that if somehow I had shorted it I hadnt done any permanent damage that may be causing the NO SAT SIG! Cheers

Some receivers show an LNB fault when a short circuit S/C is present

If you have no signal maybe you have an O/C open circuit

Technoless, make sure you have enough of the inner conductor sticking out the front of the connector. I usually guess it as about 2-3mm.

Well made new F-connections and still didnt work! So replaced the 20m cable with a new one... unwound it and straightened it, got it working perfectly on the patio but when threaded through the run it didnt work.. So in conclusion im guessing theres to sharp a bend causing the problem... so considering re-routing somehow...What a pain! Keep posting till its resolved..Cheers
