New to satellite and wanting to pick up satellites/channels that show the english premier league footy.
Dish : I hear that Gibertini dishes are good. How big is a 1metre dish compared to a normal sky dish size? How big a dish do i need for Glasgow , Scotland. Which satellites would i be able to pick up? Does anyone have any pics of different dish sizes next to each other so i can compare n contrast. I have moany neighbours. LNB : Does it matter what the ratio is, i.e 0.3 or 0.2 etc or are they all mostly the same. Motor: Are technomate motors the best? Receiver: Which is a good linux receiver that can open quite a few channels and also possibly show me HD content. Last edited by imran999; 22-08-08 at 04:10 PM. Reason: Condensed post to be more factual. :) |

Not sure about the footy as i want to know too,but i have just bought a motorised system with a 1metre dish and in answer to your question,it is one hell of a big dish compared to a sly minidish,so if your neighbours are moaners i dont recommend you go for one
![]() as for lnb,it does not matter really as they are basically all the same. Technomate motors are good but i got a Moteck SG2100 motor with my system which is a Technomate motor under a different name ![]() Receivers vary depending on what you want, linux maybe a bit too technical for a first timer unless you know a bit about how linux works. If you want a receiver with pvr and is patchable via a usb stick then go for the Technomate 5400CI+ (which is the one i have). It also has a card slot and a slot for a cam(if you want to go that route). If you want HD then the Technomate 6800 HD is a good receiver too although a bit expensive at the moment but the choice is obviously down to you .Have a read through some of the threads on here about Technomate if your unsure,it may help in your decision. Hope this helped but it is only my opinion. |

i dont mind linux....could pick it up from googling if need be. Im IT literate so dont mind dabbling.
Maybe i can get away with a 85cm dish instead. I am trying to find out what the smallest dish size i need to get footy, not bothered bout the rest as mostly just rubbish anyway. |

How long is a piece of string ? the dish size depends on the satellite you want to view, in Glasgow i would go for a 1.2mtr dish, you will need that size for 1West and other satellites, I use to use (ex sat installer) a 1.2mtr Channel Master dishes (still have mine but had dismantled it due to house move)
The Channel Master dishes are one of the best makes on the market, great @ signal recieving and built to last, i have brought in 1West on a 1mtr dish but pictures can mosiac/break up in rain, snow etc Jaima |

Dish size depends on which satellite you want to use for your epl fix.
And that depends which card / package you have access to. 1W is all well and good atm, but are you going to pay the best part of a thousand quid a year for a sub once it goes secure?????

A zone "A" dish which is the smallest Sky dish and meant for down south (England) will be ample for for Hotbird @ 13East as this bird is the most powerfull of all satellites in Europe (gives the biggest spectrum on an spectrum analyser) so any sky dish will do the job, as for the difference in LNB`s ie 0.2 or 0.3 this is the signal to noise ratio the lower the point the less noise and the less interference in the signals

Football wise things are changing. No one knows when 1west will go secure. Most think that it will not be long. Then it will be a new ball game.No one knows what will be open then 'If anything'.
Until then it would be best not to spend too much on equipment. No one knows what will be needed. I also have a tm5400.It is a nice easy box to use and a bit future proof. Analougesat is best placed to advise on dish sizes.

LNB's are not all the same. Most will work fine, but if you are trying to pick up a fringe satellite, you need a half deacent one atleast. Generally the lower noise LNB's are better but quite often you see better results on a good quality 0.3 than a cheap 0.1.
