Default Why buy a 1080p TV when Sky+ HD only outputs 1080i

To anyone with technical knowledge,

I'm just about to buy into HDTV as an old LCD TV went kaput at the same time as an old Panasonic DVD recorder. I'm starting by having the house re-wired with modern cabale capable of HDTV and eventually want to move to Sky+ HD.

Having read what I can on Sky+ HD it would appear that Sky+ HD broadcast only 1080i ( or 720p) and thus cannot take advantage of any 1080p TV without de-interlacing. The following is an extract from Wkipedia on de-interlacing.

"Interlaced video requires the necessarily imperfect process of deinterlacing, and many experts hold that that casts doubt on the wisdom of the choice of 1080i (interlaced) as a standard in HDTV television and video (along with 720p (progressive)). The EBU European Broadcasting Union has argued against the use of interlaced video in production, recommending the use of 1080p/50fps (frames per second) as a future production standard for easier conversion to other formats"

Thus if Sky+ HD transmissions are only in 1080i then what benefits are obtained by buying any 1080p TV? I have been looking at the Samsung LE32A656 which looked superb in the shop but doubt I'll see any benefit over a 1080i TV

Also does anyone know if Sky are planning to upgrade to 1080p transmissions when they introduce new box manuafcaturers other than Thomson?

many thanks

Although you are in Spain, good weather etc, I would take note of what the BBC HD are doing, I am biased against pay tv,my choice, however
the BBC HD is the flag ship, others follow.

1080i is the standard set for transmissions im affraid.

1080p tv, blue ray player?????????................................... .....

1080 p tv is better than other resolutions for sky as there is less scaling involved.

plus all tv's are progressive anyway.

Most HDTV production is 1080p, it's just transmission that is 1080i as it uses less bandwidth.

BBC HD isn't full 1080i either, it doesn't use the full 1920x1080, I can't remember the exact parameters but it's something like 1520x1080i - that's why the other FTA HD Channel, Luxe HD is a much better picture.

So HD terry will be awful if thats what everone thinks of Uk sat HD,

ill stick to steam SD for now, unless the repo auctions change my mind
but then i wont give more than £50 for a LCD or Plasma & have to see it working first, not just pat tested.

I saw a guy give £60 for a 42 inch lcd at auction, pat tested but duff
we all told him to test it immediate,he knew better and missed the
one hour return slot.

Before you all comment, yes I am the nutter who gave Maplin £1.49 for a
F plug connector.

Well that's just about having immediate availability. If you'd known two days earlier that you'd need it, you could have ordered two for £1 delivered, or less.

I'm not saying that HD telly is awful, far from it. It could be better, but then broadcast TV will never be studio quality.

when the reader e-mails keep piling up in my in-box, I feel the need to revisit a topic that I've already written about. In this case, the subject is HDTV resolution, and 1080p resolution in particular.
