r u using these settings:

Bits per second: 115200 Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow control: None
and make sure u r using the right comport: ie Com1, com2 etc.

am new to this aswell but had the same problem but mine was setting rather than comport.

still having issues with your max232? I bought mine from fleabay and noticed - 45 minutes into trying to flash - that the wires were actually in the wrong order and had to cut and reorder the wires on the cable. worked perfectly fine after that.

sounds like you haven't got a true 9 pin lead and you might be using a null modem cable that won't work.

What you could do is if you can remove the 2 little screws that are attached to the com port on your jtag then you should be able to connect it to your com port of your pc direct, might be a little fiddly but this will defo check it.

Also the modems isn't bricked is it?

i have tried as sugested and plugged directly into the serial port the port has a image on it says IOIOI but still nothing ? or the port on the back of laptop with just a picture of a square - i guess this one is for a aditional monitor.

i know the pins are correct from the max232 board to the modem! it has to be the serial cable or the wrong socket im using? please help

where can i get the correct cable.?

Arron
