Current, the television channel backed by former US vice president Al Gore, is considering launching a version of the service for German viewers.
“In the process of expanding in Europe, Germany is one of several possible future markets,” confirmed chief operating officer Mark Goldman to German industry publication kress. “We receive inquiries from all over the world. There is enormous interest in Current,” he added. “According to our observations, Germany is a market that could soon be ripe for Current.” The channel was launched in the USA in August 2005. In Europe there are currently domestic variations for the UK and Ireland as well as Italy, where Current is distributed on pay-TV platforms Sky Digital and Sky Italia respectively. The channel, which targets viewers aged 18 to 34 years, mainly screens user generated content. Viewers can use Current as a platform for their own thoughts, views and messages. In addition to material uploaded by its audience via www.current.com, the channel also offers news and entertainment programmes produced in-house. “TV and the web amount to the same thing to us,” said Goldman. “Unlike most broadcasters we do not only use television to attract people to the Internet. On the contrary – People go to Current.com, swap thoughts, concerns and videos, and then we bring the best of it to the TV screen.” With UProm.TV Germany already has a thematic channel which mainly shows user generated content. That service was launched in April 2007. Source:Rapid Tv News |
