Hi,
I am going to get a satellite system, and was wondering on where to mount it. Currently the sly is on the front of the house, I never did really like it there. I am looking at a 95cm - 1m dish. Looking at the attached, I would like to mount it on the side of my house, but cant go too far back otherwise I will cut out the East. I think I should get between 15.5W and 42E and am using a motorised mounting. 15.5W ![]() 42E ![]() Do you guys think I will be ok, or would I be better still mounting it on the front of the house? If that was the case I would ideally want it ounted pretty high, up in the apex, but if anything needs doing, ir is dam high, over 3 ladder lengths.......... My house is the one with the green dot over the right side of the roof Thanks in advance. Bob Last edited by bobsp; 28-08-08 at 01:07 AM. Reason: text |

I'm looking at that and thinking "pole on back of garage".
Using the same site, click the box "show obstacle line of sight checker" Put the green balloon "x" at possible mounting points. Move the red balloon "x" along gutters and apex likely to obstruct the signal. If the height displayed is greater than the difference between the actual item height and the mount height, it should be OK. So if the obstacle is 7m high, the LOS check gives 4m then the mount will have to be at least 3m to clear it, for a satellite in that direction. |

Hi,
My garage is the one to the left of the green marker, I think you may have been thinking it was to the right. That is next doors, I cant imagine I can mount a dish onto next doors garage, even though it would be in my side, in my garden. |

No I could tell, your garage was north-west of your house.
Garage gutter height >2m. House height (roof apex) approx 8m (?). That's why I suggested trying the obstacle checker, as you know (or can reasonably guess) the relevant dimensions, and whether obstacles block desired satellites, and how high to mount to clear them. edit: Failing that, you could always mount nearer to ground level, in the northermost corner of the garden where there's a grey patch, possibly summerhouse or patio. I think you mean like below.
![]() The apex is very high, more than 2.8 metres from where the dish would go. You might be able to tell looking at the front of the house, I dint think I will be able to get Hotbird. By putting it any higher, tall pole, I dont think it will stand upto the winds. I would rather it at the back though....

I could do, that would be the best place, do you rekon it would stand up to the wind, being exposed (I presume you mean so it goes above the roofline)
Install would not be much fun as we have a conservatory on the back, The window cleaner wont even clean the upstairs windows.... |

Yes, exactly. You have to check, as your pic shows with the x on the intersection of the gable end and signal path, also the height of the apex which too is on the signal path.
See it gives you the chance to try several mounting options, you may find better clearance for the satellite arc by trying the eastern side if the garage back wall. I suspect the garage east-side apex would be too close to the house, and of course the west-side apex within the neighbour's boundary. You may well end up going with your original front or east house-mounted options but at least you'll have chosen that with good reason. Know what you mean re. conservatories. I had an Astra1/Hotbird 13º 80cm dish on a pole (over gutter) at my parents' house. They subsequently had a conservatory built beneath it, and as the dish has been redundant several years it had to be brought down earlier this year during the high winds - before nature used it to break through the glass roof below. I think I will have to go with the front of the house, might get away with the east side, but it will be near enough on the frint anyway.
Thanks guys. |
