Hopefully these questions will be easy to answer. I've never had any kind of satellite TV. I've been doing a lot of searching but I can't quite get the answers straight in my head for the following questions:

(assuming I've got a working dish correctly aligned for Freesat):
If I get a generic FTA receiver such as a technomate will I be able to get all the Freesat channels (and, therefore, ch5 when it goes on Freesat)?
Is a Freesat receiver just a FTA receiver but with a special Freesat EPG?

Yes you will get all the available standard definition channels, apart from CH5 at the moment. And yes a Freesat receiver is just a FTA receiver with the the Freesat 7 day EPG

Thanks for replying. By 'standard definition' do you mean that I can only get HD on a proper Freesat box or can a FTA HD box also get HD? Does a Technomate HD box need some kind of card to get Freesat HD?

No, the TM HD receivers will get all available FTA HD channels.

Just got a TM6800, and can see BBC HD, LuxeTV , CH4 HD and ITV HD (when broadcasting)

For ch4 HD you ned a Sky card, which works with the TM6800 OK, but it will need putting in a Sky box to keep it alive.
