Can you please provide more details regarding the laptop, model number, operating system etc.
How did it go wrong?
Your keyboard should work on boot up, independent of the Hard drive and Operating System, so that you can enter the BIOS, or press F8 to select safe mode.
Does it have PS2 ports for an external keyboard, or a USB port so that you can try a USB keyboard?

Is the laptop keyboard working?
I have just managed to get onto the Sony home page, but I can't download the documents I need as your model is not in their list.
If you go onto the Sony support page:
_http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/tutorials/recovery/recovery.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons
and click on I can't find my VAIO model then fill in your product code and serial number. located on the bottom of your laptop, you can get access top the FAQ's which should help.

It's supposed to be located on the bottom of the laptop. Do you have any instruction manuals that came with the laptop?
Try pressing the F2 key repeatedly when starting up your laptop.
I can't find your model as it's in the archives and without the product code and serial nuber Sony wont grant me access.
For a far later model VAIO:
IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • This procedure deletes ALL data stored on your hard disk drive.
  • Backup all important data before going further.
Restore BIOS defaults:
  1. Insert the recovery CD/DVD in the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Start or restart your VAIO.
  3. When you see the Sony logo, press F2 repeatedly to enter the BIOS.
  4. Once in the BIOS, insert the first recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  5. Press F9 to restore the default values (F5 on VAIO desktops).
  6. When asked to confirm, press ENTER.
  7. Press F10 to save the configuration and exit the BIOS.
  8. When asked to confirm, press ENTER again.
  9. The VAIO restarts and boots on the recovery CD.
To start the system recovery, proceed as follows:
  1. Turn on your computer (using AC power only) and insert the first Vaio recovery disc directly into the disc drive.
  2. If you are still able to access Windows, shut down your computer (Start/Turn Off Computer/Turn off).
  3. Wait 10 seconds then turn the computer back on.
  4. Please press a key when asked.
  5. The system starts to read the Vaio recovery disc automatically and you are asked to wait.
  6. Click Next in the window that appears.
