Have you not got a motorola modem from VM' as well as your set top I havnt heard of the set top being a modem aswell, I have had broadband with vm for about 3 years and have a seperate box with this you plug your wireless router into this then plug your laptop into router go on set up wizard and it configs every thing and away you go May be you just plug router into set top then laptop into set top and let the wizerd do the work, hope this helps

you need a modem you need to connect your router to your modem using an ethernet cable then connect your pc to your router using another ethernet cable or if youre going wireless you can configure it with the software that comes with the router or just use windows zero config which will do it for you
